Shurayh bin Ubayd reported,

Iyad bin Ghanm flogged the governor of Dariya when it was conquered. Hisham bin Hakeem spoke harshly to him over this, until Iyad became angry. Several nights passed, then Hisham bin Hakeem came to him and apologized. Then Hisham said to Iyad, "Did you not hear the Prophet ﷺ say, 'Among the people most severely punished are those who inflict the harshest punishments on people in this world'?"Iyad bin Ghanm replied, "Hisham bin Hakeem, we have heard what you heard and we have seen what you have seen. But did you not hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Whoever wishes to advise a ruler about a matter should not do so openly. Rather, let him take him by the hand and speak to him in private. If he accepts it, well and good. If not, he has fulfilled his duty toward him.' Hisham, you have been bold indeed, daring to confront a ruler appointed by Allah. Were you not afraid that the ruler might kill you, and you would become one slain by a ruler of Allah تبارك وتعالى?"
