Jabir bin Abdullah reported,

I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ speaking about the period when revelation had paused. He said in his account, "As I was walking along, I heard a voice from the sky. I raised my head and there was the angel who had come to me at Hira, seated on a throne between the sky and the earth. I was gripped with terror at the sight of him, so I returned home and said, 'Wrap me up, wrap me up.' So they covered me with a cloak, and Allah revealed, "You who are wrapped in a cloak, arise and warn, and magnify your Lord" up to His words "and shun all filth" [Muddaththir 74:1–5]. This was before prayer was made obligatory, and the filth referred to the idols.

حدثنا عبد الرزاق عن معمر قال الزهري أخبرني أبو سلمة بن عبد الرحمن

عن جابر بن عبد الله قال

سمعت رسول الله ﷺ وهو يحدث عن فترة الوحي فقال في حديثه فبينا أنا أمشي سمعت صوتا من السماء فرفعت رأسي فإذا الملك الذي جاءني بحراء جالس على كرسي بين السماء والأرض فجئثت منه رعبا فرجعت فقلت زملوني زملوني فدثروني فأنزل الله عز وجل {يا أيها المدثر قم فأنذر وربك فكبر} إلى قوله {والرجز فاهجر} قبل أن تفرض الصلاة وهي الأوثان
