The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to al-Aliyah, and as he passed through the market he came upon a dead goat with stunted ears. He picked it up and lifted it, then asked, "How much would any of you like to pay to have this?"They replied, "We would not want it for any price. What would we do with it?"He asked again, "How much would you like to have it?"They said, "By Allah, even if it were alive, it would still be defective because of its stunted ears, so how about now that it is dead?"He said, "By Allah, this world is more insignificant to Allah than this carcass is to you."
حدثنا عفان حدثنا وهيب حدثنا جعفر عن أبيه
أن رسول الله ﷺ أتى العالية فمر بالسوق فمر بجدي أسك ميت فتناوله فرفعه ثم قال بكم تحبون أن هذا لكم قالوا ما نحب أنه لنا بشيء وما نصنع به قال بكم تحبون أنه لكم قالوا والله لو كان حيا لكان عيبا فيه أنه أسك فكيف وهو ميت قال فوالله للدنيا أهون على الله من هذا عليكم
Its chain of transmission is sahih. It appears in Muslim 4/2272, no. 2957, in the Book of Zuhd, its beginning, Tirmidhi 4/560, no. 2321, where he graded it hasan, in the Book of Zuhd, chapter on what has been said about the insignificance of this world to Allah, Ibn Majah 2/1377, no. 4111, in the Book of Zuhd, chapter the parable of this world, and Darimi 2/296, no. 2237, and Hakim 4/306. The hadith was already mentioned at 8445. The meaning of "asakk" is that it has small ears, though it has also been said to refer to a defect in the teeth.
