I lost my camel one night and passed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was tightening something for Ayesha. He said to me, "What is the matter with you, Jabir?"I replied, "I lost my camel," or "my camel went missing on a dark night."He said to me, "There is your camel. Go and take it."I went in the direction he indicated but did not find it. I returned to him and said, "Prophet of Allah, I did not find it."He said to me, "There is your camel. Go and take it."I went again in the direction he indicated but did not find it. I returned to him and said, "May my father and mother be ransom for you, Prophet of Allah, by Allah I did not find it."He said to me, "Wait until I am finished." When he had finished, he took my hand and walked with me until we reached the camel. He handed it over to me and said, "This is your camel."The people had already set off. As I was riding my camel at the rear, the camel was slow-paced. I said to myself, "What a misfortune for me that I have nothing but a slow camel!"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was riding behind me and heard what I said. He caught up to me and asked, "What did you say a moment ago, Jabir?"I had forgotten what I said and replied, "I did not say anything, Prophet of Allah."Then I remembered and said, "Prophet of Allah, I said, 'What a misfortune that I have nothing but a slow camel!'"The Prophet ﷺ struck the camel's hindquarters with a whip, or with my whip, and it set off at a pace faster than any camel I had ever ridden, pulling at the reins as it went. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, "Will you sell me this camel of yours?"I said, "Yes."He asked, "For how much?"I said, "For one ounce of silver."He said, "Excellent! How many camels there are for an ounce, and how many!"I said, "Prophet of Allah, there is no water-carrying camel in Madinah I would prefer in its place."The Prophet ﷺ said, "I have bought it for an ounce."I dismounted to the ground. He asked, "What is wrong?"I said, "Your camel."He said to me, "Mount your camel."I said, "It is not my camel, but yours."We would only repeat a request to him twice when he had ordered us, but if he ordered us a third time we would not argue. So I rode the camel until I came to my aunt in Madinah. I said to her, "Do you not see that I sold our water-carrying camel to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for an ounce?"I did not see that this pleased her, for it was an excellent water-carrying camel. Then I took some leaves and fed them to it, took its halter, and led it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I found him standing speaking with a man.I said, "Here is your camel, Prophet of Allah."He took the halter, then called out for Bilal and said, "Weigh out an ounce for Jabir, and give him full measure."I went with Bilal, and he weighed out an ounce for me and gave me extra in the weight. I returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was still standing speaking with that man. I said to him, "He has weighed an ounce for me and given me full measure."While he was thus engaged, I went off to my house without realizing. He called out, "Where is Jabir?"They said, "He has gone to his family."He said, "Catch him and bring him to me."His messenger came running to me and said, "Jabir, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is calling you."I came to him and he said, "Take your camel."I said, "It is not my camel, it is your camel, Messenger of Allah."He said, "Take your camel."I said, "It is not my camel, it is your camel, Messenger of Allah."He said, "Take your camel."So I took it. He said, "By my life, we did not benefit ourselves by making you dismount from it."I came to my aunt with the water-carrying camel and the ounce of silver. I said to her, "What do you think? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave me an ounce and returned my camel to me."
