Jabir reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A righteous man saw in a vision tonight that Abu Bakr was joined to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and Umar was joined to Abu Bakr, and Uthman was joined to Umar."Jabir said, "When we left the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we said, 'As for the righteous man, he is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself. As for what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned about them being joined to one another, they are the ones who will be entrusted with this affair which Allah sent His Prophet ﷺ with.'"
حدثنا يزيد بن عبد ربه حدثنا محمد بن حرب حدثني الزبيدي عن ابن شهاب عن عمرو بن أبان بن عثمان
أنه كان يحدث أن رسول الله ﷺ قال أري الليلة رجل صالح أن أبا بكر نيط برسول الله ﷺ ونيط عمر بأبي بكر ونيط عثمان بعمر قال جابر فلما قمنا من عند رسول الله ﷺ قلنا أما الرجل الصالح فرسول الله ﷺ وأما ذكر رسول الله ﷺ من نوط بعضهم لبعض فهم ولاة هذا الأمر الذي بعث الله به نبيه ﷺ
Its isnad is sahih. Zubaydi is Muhammad bin Walid bin Amir, the trustworthy and firmly reliable judge, who was among the senior companions of Zuhri. Abu Dawud narrated the hadith in 4/208, no. 4636, in the Book of Sunnah, in the chapter on the Caliphs.
