I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey, and we came to a watering place. He asked, "Will you not drink, Jabir?"I replied, "Yes."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dismounted, and I drank. Then he went off to relieve himself, and I prepared water for his ablution. He came back and performed his ablution, then stood and prayed in a single garment, crossing its two ends over his shoulders. I stood behind him, but he took hold of my ear and placed me on his right.
حدثنا أبو جعفر المدائني محمد بن جعفر أنبأنا ورقاء عن محمد بن المنكدر
كنت مع رسول الله ﷺ في سفر فانتهينا إلى مشرعة فقال ألا تشرع يا جابر قال فقلت بلى قال فنزل رسول الله ﷺ وأشرعت قال ثم ذهب لحاجته ووضعت له وضوءا فجاء فتوضأ ثم قام فصلى في ثوب واحد خالف بين طرفيه فقمت خلفه فأخذ بأذني فجعلني عن يمينه
Its isnad is hasan, because of Muhammad bin Jafar Abu Jafar Madaini, about whose memory some scholars raised doubts, and he has a narration in Muslim. The hadith is found in Muslim 1/532, no. 766, in the book of the prayer of travelers, the chapter on night prayer, and in Abu Dawud 1/171, no. 634, in the book of prayer, the chapter on when the garment is narrow.
