Umar asked permission to enter upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and with him were some women from Quraysh speaking with him and pressing him with their questions, their voices raised above his. When Umar asked permission to enter, they hurried to get behind the curtain. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ granted him permission, so he entered while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was laughing.Umar said, "May Allah keep you smiling, Messenger of Allah. What made you laugh?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "I am amazed at these women who were with me. The moment they heard your voice, they rushed for the curtain."Umar said, "Messenger of Allah, you are more deserving of their awe."Then Umar turned to them and said, "Enemies of your own selves, do you stand in awe of me but not of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"They answered, "Yes, you are harsher and rougher than the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, Satan has never met you walking down a path without taking a different path from yours."Yaqub said, "I cannot count how many times I heard him say, Salih narrated to us from Ibn Shihab."
حدثنا يعقوب حدثنا أبي عن صالح قال ابن شهاب أخبرني عبد الحميد بن عبد الرحمن بن زيد أن محمد بن سعد بن أبي وقاص أخبره أن أباه
استأذن عمر على رسول الله ﷺ وعنده نساء من قريش يكلمنه ويستكثرنه عالية أصواتهن فلما استأذن قمن يبتدرن الحجاب فأذن له رسول الله ﷺ يعني فدخل ورسول الله ﷺ يضحك فقال عمر أضحك الله سنك يا رسول الله قال رسول الله ﷺ عجبت من هؤلاء اللاتي كن عندي فلما سمعن صوتك ابتدرن الحجاب قال عمر فأنت يا رسول الله كنت أحق أن يهبن ثم قال عمر أي عدوات أنفسهن أتهبنني ولا تهبن رسول الله ﷺ قلن نعم أنت أغلظ وأفظ من رسول الله ﷺ قال رسول الله ﷺ والذي نفسي بيده ما لقيك الشيطان قط سالكا فجا إلا سلك فجا غير فجك وقال يعقوب ما أحصي ما سمعته يقول حدثنا صالح عن ابن شهاب
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Salih is Ibn Kaysan of Madinah, a trustworthy and firm imam, counted among the Followers, though he was older in age than Ibn Shihab Zuhri. Nevertheless, he studied under him and took knowledge from him.Abdul-Hameed bin Abdul-Rahman was a trustworthy and reliable Follower, born during the time of Umar. His father had named him Muhammad, but Umar later changed it and named him Abdul-Hameed.In the manuscripts of the Musnad, his lineage appears here as follows, Abdul-Hameed bin Abdul-Rahman bin Muhammad bin Zayd, but the addition of Muhammad in the lineage is definitely a mistake. Abdul-Hameed's father was Abdul-Rahman bin Zayd bin Khattab Adawi, who was born during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah. His biography is found in Tahdhib 6:179–180 and Isabah 5:70, and Ibn Saad also mentioned him in Tabaqat, in the biography of his father Zayd bin Khattab, 274/1/3. He did not mention any children of Zayd other than this Abdul-Rahman and Asma bint Zayd. Furthermore, this addition does not appear in the chain of the hadith in the Sahihayn, so we have removed it, relying on trustworthy grounds. See Fath al-Bari 7:27–38, and Muslim 2:233–234. The hadith will also come again at 1581 and 1624. Fath means the wide road.As for the phrase at the end of the hadith, "Abdullah said, My father said," and so on, he means that Yaqub narrated it from his father, from Salih, who said "Ibn Shihab" using the wording found in the chain of transmission. It is also related that he heard his father say more than once, "Salih narrated to us from Ibn Shihab," in which his father explicitly stated that he had heard directly from Salih. This was stated as additional confirmation of the reliability of the chain. It will come again at 1581 and 1624.
