On the day of Uhud, I saw two men in white garments to the right and left of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, fighting on his behalf as fiercely as could be. I had never seen them before, nor did I see them afterward.
Its isnad is sahih. As for his statement, "Saad said, from Ibrahim bin Abdul-Rahman bin Awf," this is the correct version. In the three original manuscripts of the book it reads, "Saad bin Ibrahim bin Abdul-Rahman bin Awf said," which is a clear and certain error, for Saad bin Ibrahim bin Abdul-Rahman bin Awf never heard from Saad bin Abu Waqqas and did not live to meet him. He only narrates from his father, from him.Imam Ahmad, as was his habit of being meticulous about the exact wording of his teachers, only meant to distinguish between the wordings of his two teachers, the brothers Yaqub and Saad, the sons of Ibrahim bin Saad bin Ibrahim bin Abdul-Rahman bin Awf. Both of them narrate the hadith from their father, Ibrahim bin Saad bin Ibrahim, from his father Saad, from his grandfather Ibrahim bin Abdul-Rahman. Yaqub said, "My father narrated to us, from his father, from his grandfather," and his grandfather is Ibrahim bin Abdul-Rahman. His brother Saad said, "My father narrated to us, from his father, from Ibrahim bin Abdul-Rahman," instead of saying, "from his grandfather."This is clear, and it is only obscure to one who has not practiced the science of the narrators and scrutinized the chains of transmission. This hadith is a repetition of hadith 1468, and the isnad of that one clarifies what we have explained regarding the isnad of this one.
