A monk presented the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a robe of fine silk brocade. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ put it on, then came to the house and took it off. He sensed that a delegation had arrived to see him, so Umar urged him to wear the robe for the delegation's arrival.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Wearing this is not appropriate for us in this world, though it will be appropriate for us in the next. But take it, Umar."Umar replied, "Shall I take it when you dislike it?"He said, "I am not telling you to wear it. Rather, send it to the land of Persia and obtain wealth in exchange for it."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent it to the Negus, who had treated well those of the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ companions who had fled to him.
حدثنا حسن حدثنا ابن لهيعة حدثنا أبو الزبير
أن راهبا أهدى لرسول الله ﷺ جبة سندس فلبسها رسول الله ﷺ ثم أتى البيت فوضعها وأحس بوفد أتوه فأمره عمر أن يلبس الجبة لقدوم الوفد فقال رسول الله ﷺ لا يصلح لباسها لنا في الدنيا ويصلح لنا في الآخرة ولكن خذها يا عمر فقال يكرهها وآخذها فقال إني لا آمرك أن تلبسها ولكن أرسل بها إلى أرض فارس فتصيب بها مالا فأرسل بها رسول الله ﷺ إلى النجاشي وكان قد أحسن إلى من فر إليه من أصحاب رسول الله ﷺ
