Jabir bin Abdullah reported,

Abu Bakr came seeking permission to enter upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, while people were sitting at his door, but he was not granted permission. Then Umar came and sought permission, and he too was not granted it. Then permission was given to Abu Bakr and Umar, and they entered. The Prophet ﷺ was sitting with his wives around him, saying nothing.Umar said to himself, "I will say something to the Prophet ﷺ, perhaps it will make him laugh."So Umar said, "Messenger of Allah, if you had only seen the daughter of Zayd, Umar's wife. She asked me for money for expenses just now, so I struck her neck."The Prophet ﷺ laughed until his back teeth showed, and he said, "They are around me, as you see, asking me for money to spend."Abu Bakr then got up to strike Ayesha, and Umar got up to strike Hafsa, both of them saying, "Are you asking the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for what he does not have?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade them from that.His wives then said, "By Allah, after this gathering we will never again ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for what he does not have."Then Allah revealed the verse of the choice, and he began with Ayesha. He said, "I want to mention a matter to you, and I would not like you to be hasty about it until you have consulted your parents."She asked, "What is it?"Then he recited to her, "Prophet, say to your wives" [Ahzab 33:28].Ayesha said, "Am I to consult my parents about you? No, I choose Allah and His Messenger. And I ask you not to tell any of your other wives what I have chosen."He replied, "Allah did not send me to be harsh, but sent me as a teacher who makes things easy. If any one of them asks me what you chose, I will tell her."One narration has "with his wives around him, silent and downcast," and another has, "He did not send me to cause hardship," or, "to cause trouble."
