Jabir bin Abdullah reported,

Abu Bakr came seeking permission to enter upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while people were sitting at his door, but he was not granted permission. Then Umar came and sought permission, and he too was not granted permission. Then permission was given to Abu Bakr and Umar, and they entered. The Prophet ﷺ was sitting with his wives around him, remaining silent.Umar said to himself, "I will speak to the Prophet ﷺ, perhaps he will laugh."So Umar said, "Messenger of Allah, if only you had seen the daughter of Zayd, the wife of Umar. She just asked me for money for expenses, so I struck her on the neck."The Prophet ﷺ laughed until his back teeth showed, and he said, "These women around me, as you see, are asking me for money for expenses."Abu Bakr then got up to strike Ayesha, and Umar got up to strike Hafsah, both of them saying, "You are asking the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for what he does not have!"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade them from doing so. His wives then said, "By Allah, after this gathering we will never ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for anything he does not have."Then Allah revealed the verses giving the choice. He began with Ayesha and said, "I wish to mention something to you, and I would not like you to be hasty about it until you consult your parents."She asked, "What is it?"He recited to her, "Prophet, say to your wives..." [Ahzab 33:28] and the verse that follows.Ayesha said, "Is it about you that I should consult my parents? Rather, I choose Allah and His Messenger. But I ask you not to tell any of your other wives what I have chosen."He replied, "Allah did not send me to be harsh, but He sent me as a teacher who makes things easy. No woman among them will ask me about what I have chosen except that I will tell her."

عن جابر قال

أقبل أبو بكر يستأذن على رسول الله ﷺ والناس ببابه جلوس فلم يؤذن له ثم أقبل عمر فاستأذن فلم يؤذن له ثم أذن لأبي بكر وعمر فدخلا والنبي ﷺ جالس وحوله نساؤه وهو ساكت فقال عمر رضي الله عنه لأكلمن النبي ﷺ لعله يضحك فقال عمر يا رسول الله لو رأيت بنت زيد امرأة عمر فسألتني النفقة آنفا فوجأت عنقها فضحك النبي ﷺ حتى بدا نواجذه قال هن حولي كما ترى يسألنني النفقة فقام أبو بكر رضي الله عنه إلى عائشة ليضربها وقام عمر إلى حفصة كلاهما يقولان تسألان رسول الله ﷺ ما ليس عنده فنهاهما رسول الله ﷺ فقلن نساؤه والله لا نسأل رسول الله ﷺ بعد هذا المجلس ما ليس عنده قال وأنزل الله عز وجل الخيار فبدأ بعائشة فقال إني أريد أن أذكر لك أمرا ما أحب أن تعجلي فيه حتى تستأمري أبويك قالت ما هو قال فتلا عليها {يا أيها النبي قل لأزواجك} الآية قالت عائشة أفيك أستأمر أبوي بل أختار الله ورسوله وأسألك أن لا تذكر لامرأة من نسائك ما اخترت فقال إن الله عز وجل لم يبعثني معنفا ولكن بعثني معلما ميسرا لا تسألني امرأة منهن عما اخترت إلا أخبرتها
