Jabir, who was among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, reported that he went on a military expedition with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the direction of Najd. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned back, Jabir returned with them. Midday rest overtook them one day in a valley dense with thorny acacia trees. The Prophet ﷺ dismounted, and the people scattered among the acacias seeking shade beneath the trees. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ settled in the shade of one tree and hung his sword on it.Jabir said, "We slept for a while, then the Prophet ﷺ called out to us. We came to him, and there was an Arabi sitting beside him."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "This man drew my sword while I was asleep. I awoke to find it unsheathed in his hand. He said, 'Who will protect you from me?' I said, 'Allah.' He said again, 'Who will protect you from me?' I said, 'Allah.' Then he sheathed the sword and sat down."The Prophet ﷺ did not punish him for what he had done.
حدثنا عبد الله قال وجدت هذا الحديث في كتاب أبي بخط يده وسمعته في موضع آخر حدثنا أبو اليمان قال أخبرني شعيب عن الزهري حدثني سنان بن أبي سنان الدؤلي وأبو سلمة بن عبد الرحمن أن
وكان من أصحاب النبي ﷺ أخبر أنه غزا مع رسول الله ﷺ غزوة قبل نجد فلما قفل رسول الله ﷺ قفل معهم فأدركتهم القائلة يوما في واد كثير العضاه فنزل النبي ﷺ وتفرق الناس في العضاه يستظلون بالشجر ونزل رسول الله ﷺ يستظل تحت شجرة فعلق بها سيفه قال جابر فنمنا بها نومة ثم إن النبي ﷺ يدعونا فأتيناه فإذا عنده أعرابي جالس فقال رسول الله ﷺ إن هذا اخترط سيفه وأنا نائم فاستيقظت وهو في يده صلتا فقال من يمنعك مني فقلت الله فقال من يمنعك مني فقلت الله فشام السيف وجلس فلم يعاقبه النبي ﷺ وقد فعل ذلك
Its isnad is sahih. Abu Yaman is Hakam bin Nafi, Shuayb is Ibn Abu Hamza, and Sinan bin Abu Sinan Dawli, or Daylami, is Madinan. The hadith was narrated by Ibn Saad in Tabaqat 2/1/24, Abu Shaykh in Akhlaq Nabi ﷺ 43, and Bayhaqi in Sunan al-Kubra 6/319 and in Dalail 3/168. Hakim also narrated it at length in full form at 3/29, naming the man Ghawrath bin Harith, and he graded it sahih, a judgment with which Dhahabi agreed.
