A boy was born to one of our men, and he named him Qasim. We said, "We will not give you the kunya of his name until we ask the Prophet ﷺ."We mentioned this to him, and he said, "Take my name, but do not take my kunya, for I was sent only as a distributor among you."
حدثنا هشيم عن حصين عن سالم بن أبي الجعد
ولد لرجل منا غلام فسماه القاسم فقلنا لا نكنيك به حتى نسأل النبي ﷺ فذكرنا له فقال تسموا باسمي ولا تكتنوا بكنيتي فإنما بعثت قاسما بينكم
Its isnad is sahih. Husayn is Ibn Abdul-Rahman Sulami, a trustworthy narrator whose memory changed, but they said that this narration of his is the most sahih on the subject. The hadith has previously appeared without the story at 14161.
