A man from the Ansar came back with his two camels used for carrying water. The sun had begun to set, and Muaz was leading the Maghrib prayer. The man joined the prayer with him, and Muaz began reciting Surah al-Baqarah, or perhaps an-Nisa, Muharib being the one uncertain about which. When the man saw this, he prayed on his own and then left.Word reached Muaz that the man had spoken ill of him. Hajjaj said in his version, "He spoke against him."The matter was mentioned to the Prophet ﷺ, who said, "Are you a cause of trial, Muaz? Are you a cause of trial, Muaz? Or one who turns people away, one who turns people away, one who turns people away."In Hajjaj's version, "One who turns people away? One who turns people away? One who turns people away?""Why did you not recite Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High [Ala 87:1] and By the sun and its brightness [Shams 91:1]? For behind you pray the elderly, the one with a need, and the weak."I think it was Muharib who was uncertain about the word "the weak."
حدثنا محمد بن جعفر وحجاج قالا حدثنا شعبة عن محارب بن دثار سمعت
أقبل رجل من الأنصار ومعه ناضحان له وقد جنحت الشمس ومعاذ يصلي المغرب فدخل معه الصلاة فاستفتح معاذ البقرة أو النساء محارب الذي يشك فلما رأى الرجل ذلك صلى ثم خرج قال فبلغه أن معاذا نال منه قال حجاج ينال منه قال فذكر ذلك للنبي ﷺ فقال أفتان أنت يا معاذ أفتان أنت يا معاذ أو فاتن فاتن فاتن وقال حجاج أفاتن أفاتن أفاتن فلولا قرأت سبح اسم ربك الأعلى والشمس وضحاها فصلى وراءك الكبير وذو الحاجة والضعيف أحسب محاربا الذي يشك في الضعيف
