The Prophet ﷺ saw a donkey that had been branded on its face, so he said, "May Allah curse the one who did this."
حدثنا عبد الرزاق أخبرنا معمر عن يحيى بن أبي كثير عن محمد بن عبد الرحمن بن ثوبان
رأى النبي ﷺ حمارا قد وسم في وجهه فقال لعن الله من فعل هذا
Its chain of transmission is sahih. All its narrators are trustworthy, with no criticism directed at any of them, Ismail bin Umaya Umawi, Abdullah bin Ubayd bin Umayr, and Abdul-Rahman bin Abdullah bin Abu Ammar Makki, nicknamed "the Ascetic" for the abundance of his worship. This hadith serves as evidence for Shafii and those who share his view permitting the eating of hyena. Abdul-Razzaq related it in 4/513, numbers 8681 and 8682, in the chapter on foods, on hyena, and Ibn Majah related something similar in 2/1078, number 3236. However, a hadith has been narrated from Khuzayma bin Juz indicating its prohibition, which is the hadith following this one in his collection. As for Abu Dawud, he related the hadith stating "it is game" in 3/154, number 3801, in the chapter on foods, on eating hyena.Scholars have differed on this matter. The companions themselves said, "The Arabs have always eaten it," while some other companions said, "Who would eat hyena?" This disagreement carried over to the jurists, who differed in their ruling accordingly. Each applied his own principles, and may Allah, if He wills, reward them for it.
