He was narrating from the Prophet ﷺ that one day he delivered a sermon in which he mentioned one of his companions who had passed away, was shrouded in a poor-quality shroud, and was buried at night. The Prophet ﷺ then forbade burying a person at night before the funeral prayer is performed over him, unless someone is compelled to do so.The Prophet ﷺ said, "When one of you shrouds his brother, let him shroud him well."
حدثنا عبد الرزاق أخبرنا ابن جريج أخبرنا أبو الزبير أنه سمع
يحدث عن النبي ﷺ أنه خطب يوما فذكر رجلا من أصحابه قبض فكفن في كفن غير طائل وقبر ليلا فزجر النبي ﷺ أن يقبر الرجل بالليل حتى يصلى عليه إلا أن يضطر إنسان إلى ذلك وقال النبي ﷺ إذا كفن أحدكم أخاه فليحسن كفنه
Its isnad is sahih. Muslim narrated it, 2/651, in the Book of Funerals, 49, on making the shroud of the deceased good. Abu Dawud, 3/505, no. 3148, Tirmidhi, 3/320, no. 995, and Ibn Majah, 1/473, no. 1474, all in the Book of Funerals, on the shroud, and likewise Nasai, 4/24, no. 1896.
