We said to Zubayr , "Abu Abdullah, what has brought you here? You abandoned the caliph until he was killed, and now you come seeking vengeance for his blood?"Zubayr
replied, "We used to recite, in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abu Bakr and Umar, and Uthman
, 'And beware of a trial which will not strike only those among you who have done wrong' [Anfal 8:25]. We never imagined that we ourselves were the ones meant by it, until it fell upon us as it has."

قلنا للزبير رضي الله عنه يا أبا عبد الله ما جاء بكم ضيعتم الخليفة حتى قتل ثم جئتم تطلبون بدمه قال الزبير رضي الله عنه إنا قرأناها على عهد رسول الله ﷺ وأبي بكر وعمر وعثمان رضي الله عنهم {واتقوا فتنة لا تصيبن الذين ظلموا منكم خاصة} لم نكن نحسب أنا أهلها حتى وقعت منا حيث وقعت

Its isnad is sahih. Shaddad bin Saeed Rasibi is trustworthy. Ghaylan bin Jareer Azdi is trustworthy. Mutarrif is Ibn Abdullah bin Shikhir Harashi Amiri, and he is a trustworthy successor, possessed of merit, piety, and refinement, born during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah. Shakhir is with a kasrah on the shin and a doubled kha with a kasrah. Harashi is with a fathah on the ha and the ra.Ibn Kathir mentioned this hadith in his tafsir, 4:39, quoting from the Musnad, then said, Bazzar also narrated it through Mutarrif from Zubayr, and said, "We do not know of Mutarrif narrating from Zubayr other than this hadith." It also appears in Majma al-Zawaid, 7:27, where it says, Ahmad narrated it with two isnads, the narrators of one of them being the narrators of the Sahih, meaning this one, and meaning by the other isnad the one that will come at 1438.
