I said to Zubayr , "Why do I not hear you narrating from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ the way I hear Ibn Masud and so-and-so and so-and-so narrating?"He replied, "I never parted from him from the moment I embraced Islam, but I heard him say these words, 'Whoever lies about me deliberately, let him take his seat in the Fire.'"
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Jami bin Shaddad Muharibi is trustworthy and precise. Amir bin Abdullah bin Zubayr is trustworthy, among the most trustworthy of people. The hadith will come again at 1428 from Abdul-Rahman bin Mahdi from Shuba in abbreviated form, without the word "deliberately" in it. See also 2675 and 2976.Bukhari related it, 1:178-179, from Abu Walid Tayalisi from Shuba, also omitting it. Likewise Ismaili related it through the route of Ghundar from Shuba, as the Hafiz quoted in Fath al-Bari, and said, "The disagreement over it concerns Shuba." Ghundar is Muhammad bin Jafar, from whom Imam Ahmad related this hadith, and it contains the addition.Likewise Ibn Majah related it, 1:10, from Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba and Muhammad bin Bashar, from Ghundar, affirming it. Abu Dawud related it, 3:257, through the route of Wabr bin Abdul-Rahman from Amir bin Abdullah bin Zubayr, affirming it. Wabr bin Abdul-Rahman Musali is a trustworthy successor. The commentator on Abu Dawud quoted Munziri, who said, "This hadith was reported by Bukhari, Nasai, and Ibn Majah, and the word 'deliberately' does not appear in the version of Bukhari and Nasai. What is preserved from Zubayr's hadith is that it does not contain 'deliberately.' It has been related from Zubayr that he said, 'By Allah, he did not say deliberately, yet you are saying deliberately!'"This conclusion that Munziri settled on is strange, and I think it is an error in transmission. The verification of the Hafiz and the chains of transmission we have mentioned indicate that the wording is preserved from Shuba and from others, and that it was one of the narrators from Shuba who omitted it, perhaps because he did not hear it from him. This is supported by the fact that Ibn Saad related it, 13/74, from Affan bin Muslim, Wahb bin Jareer bin Hazim, and Abu Walid Tayalisi, all three from Shuba, omitting "deliberately." Then he said, "Wahb bin Jareer said in his hadith about Zubayr, 'By Allah, he did not say deliberately, yet you are saying deliberately.'"So this is a disagreement among the narrators from Shuba, with Jareer objecting to his fellow narrators who related from their teacher and added a word they had not heard from him. But the matter became confused for Munziri, and he thought this objection came from Zubayr himself, when there is nothing in the context that requires this misunderstanding. Rather, the context and the explicit wording refute it.In our era there have arisen certain notable figures who wage war against the sunnah. They have made a great fuss over this word and turned it into a lever with which they claim to cast doubt on the soundness of the narration. Indeed, they may well be accusing the companions and the successors of fabrication and lying with easy conscience, on the grounds that they were not doing it deliberately! Yet the companions and the upright bearers of this knowledge are purer and more fearful of Allah than to lie about the Messenger of Allah. As for error, every human being errs, and sin lies only in what is deliberate.
