Anas bin Malik reported,

A Jewish man passed by the Prophet ﷺ and his companions and said, "As-samu alaykum" (death be upon you).The companions of the Prophet ﷺ returned the greeting.The Prophet ﷺ said, "He only said, 'As-samu alaykum.'"The Jewish man was seized and brought forward, and he confessed.The Prophet ﷺ said, "Return upon them what they have said."

أن يهوديا مر على النبي ﷺ وأصحابه فقال السام عليكم فرد عليه أصحاب النبي ﷺ فقال النبي ﷺ إنما قال السام عليكم فأخذ اليهودي فجيء به فاعترف قال النبي ﷺ ردوا عليهم ما قالوا
