A man asked, "Messenger of Allah, where is my father?"He replied, "In the Fire."When the man turned to leave, the Prophet called him back and said, "My father and your father are both in the Fire."

أن رجلا قال يا رسول الله أين أبي قال في النار قال فلما قفا دعاه فقال إن أبي وأباك في النار
Its chain of transmission is sahih. It is found in Muslim 1/191, no. 347, in the Book of Faith, in the chapter explaining that whoever dies in disbelief is in the Fire, and in Abu Dawud 5/90, no. 4718, in the Book of Sunnah, in the chapter on the offspring of polytheists, and in Ibn Majah 1/501, no. 1573, in the Book of Funerals, in the chapter on visiting the graves of polytheists.The disagreement among the scholars on a matter like this has already been mentioned, along with the view that it is abrogated by the words of Allah Most High, "and We do not punish until We have sent a messenger" [Isra 17:15]. It is also reported that Allah permitted him to intercede for his own parents specifically.
