The people questioned the Prophet of Allah ﷺ one day until they wore him out with their questions. So he went out one day, climbed the pulpit, and said, "Ask me nothing today without my telling you about it."The companions of the Prophet ﷺ grew fearful that some grave matter was at hand.Anas said, "I could not turn to my right or my left without finding every man with his head wrapped in his garment, weeping."Then a man spoke up, one who used to be reproached in argument and attributed to someone other than his father, and he asked, "Prophet of Allah, who is my father?"The Prophet replied, "Your father is Hudhafa."Then Umar stood up, or he said, then Umar spoke up, and said, "We are content with Allah as Lord, with Islam as religion, and with Muhammad as Messenger, seeking refuge with Allah from the evil of trials."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, "I have never seen a day like today in good and in evil. Paradise and the Fire were pictured for me, until I saw them both just beyond this wall."Rawh narrated to us, Hisham bin Abu Abdullah narrated to us, from Qatada, from Anas, the like of it. He said that Qatada used to mention this hadith whenever he was asked about this verse, "Do not ask about things which, if made clear to you, would trouble you" [Maidah 5:101].
