The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in prayer, then turned to face us and said, "I am your imam, so do not precede me in bowing, prostrating, or standing. I see you from in front of me and from behind me."Then he said, "By the One in whose hand my soul rests, if you had seen what I have seen, you would laugh little and weep much."They asked, "Messenger of Allah, what did you see?"He replied, "I saw Paradise and the Fire."
حدثنا عفان حدثنا عبد الواحد حدثنا المختار بن فلفل
صلى رسول الله ﷺ صلاة فأقبل علينا بوجهه فقال إني إمامكم فلا تسبقوني بالركوع ولا بالسجود ولا بالقيام فإني أراكم من بين يدي ومن خلفي ثم قال والذي نفسي بيده لو رأيتم ما رأيت لضحكتم قليلا ولبكيتم كثيرا قالوا يا رسول الله وما رأيت قال رأيت الجنة والنار
Its isnad is sahih. It was previously mentioned with similar wording in 13461, and it is found in Muslim 1/320 no. 426, in the Book of Prayer, chapter on the prohibition of preceding the imam, and in Nasai 3/83 no. 1363, in the Book of Forgetfulness, chapter on the prohibition of hastening to leave before the imam, and in Ibn Abu Shayba 2/328.
