Anas bin Malik reported,

The Prophet ﷺ used to meet a man and say, "So-and-so, how are you?"The man would reply, "Well, I praise Allah."The Prophet ﷺ would then say to him, "May Allah keep you well."One day the Prophet ﷺ met him and asked, "How are you, so-and-so?"The man answered, "Well, if I am grateful."The Prophet ﷺ remained silent.The man said, "Prophet of Allah, you used to ask me and then say, 'May Allah keep you well,' but today you remained silent."The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "I used to ask you and you would reply, 'Well, I praise Allah,' so I would say, 'May Allah keep you well.' But today you said, 'If I am grateful,' so I had doubts and remained silent."

عن أنس بن مالك

أن النبي ﷺ كان يلقى رجلا فيقول يا فلان كيف أنت فيقول بخير أحمد الله فيقول له النبي ﷺ جعلك الله بخير فلقيه النبي ﷺ ذات يوم فقال كيف أنت يا فلان فقال بخير إن شكرت قال فسكت عنه فقال يا نبي الله إنك كنت تسألني فتقول جعلك الله بخير وإنك اليوم سكت عني فقال له إني كنت أسألك فتقول بخير أحمد الله فأقول جعلك الله بخير وإنك اليوم قلت إن شكرت فشككت فسكت عنك
