Ubayda reported,

We used to think that the middle prayer was the dawn prayer. Then Ali told us that on the day of the Battle of the Confederates, they fought and the enemy kept us from praying the afternoon prayer. The Prophet ﷺ said, "May Allah fill their graves with fire," or, "May Allah fill their bellies with fire, just as they kept us from the middle prayer."From that day on, we knew that the middle prayer was the afternoon prayer.

عن عبيدة قال

كنا نرى أن صلاة الوسطى صلاة الصبح قال فحدثنا علي رضي الله عنه أنهم يوم الأحزاب اقتتلوا وحبسونا عن صلاة العصر فقال النبي ﷺ اللهم املأ قبورهم نارا أو املأ بطونهم نارا كما حبسونا عن صلاة الوسطى قال فعرفنا يومئذ أن صلاة الوسطى صلاة العصر
