His uncle had been absent from the battle of Badr, so he said, "I missed the very first battle the Prophet ﷺ fought against the polytheists. If Allah lets me witness a battle against the polytheists, He will surely see what I do."When the day of Uhud came and the Muslims were routed, he said, "O Allah, I disavow before You what these people have done," meaning his companions, "and I declare my innocence before You of what these others have brought," meaning the polytheists. Then he advanced.Saad met him near the rear of the army at Uhud (Yazid said in Baghdad, "near its rear, before Uhud"), and he said, "By the One in whose hand my soul rests, I can smell the fragrance of paradise from beyond Uhud."Saad said, "I am with you."Saad said, "But I could not do what he did."More than eighty wounds were found on his body, between sword strikes, spear thrusts, and arrow shots.He said, "We used to say that this verse was revealed concerning him and his companions, 'Among them is he who has fulfilled his vow, and among them is he who awaits'" [Ahzab 33:23].
حدثنا يزيد أخبرنا حميد
أن عمه غاب عن قتال بدر فقال غبت من أول قتال قاتله النبي ﷺ المشركين لئن الله أشهدني قتالا للمشركين ليرين الله ما أصنع فلما كان يوم أحد انكشف المسلمون فقال اللهم إني أعتذر إليك مما صنع هؤلاء يعني أصحابه وأبرأ إليك مما جاء به هؤلاء يعني المشركين ثم تقدم فلقيه سعد لأخراها دون أحد وقال يزيد ببغداد بأخراها دون أحد فقال سعد أنا معك قال سعد فلم أستطع أن أصنع ما صنع فوجد فيه بضع وثمانون من بين ضربة بسيف وطعنة برمح ورمية بسهم قال فكنا نقول فيه وفي أصحابه نزلت {فمنهم من قضى نحبه ومنهم من ينتظر}
