On the day of Hunayn, Hawazin and Ghatafan gathered a great host against the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had ten thousand men or more, and with him were the freed Meccans. The enemy brought along their livestock and their children and placed them behind their backs. When the two sides met, the men turned and fled. The Prophet ﷺ that day was on a white mule. He dismounted and said, "I am the servant of Allah and His Messenger."That day he called out twice, with no words in between. He turned to his right and said, "Company of the Ansar!"They answered, "At your service, Messenger of Allah. Be of good cheer, we are with you."Then he turned to his left and said, "Company of the Ansar!"They answered, "At your service, Messenger of Allah, we are with you."Then he came down to the ground, the two sides clashed, the enemy was routed, and the Muslims took spoils. The Prophet ﷺ gave to the freed Meccans and distributed among them. The Ansar said, "We are summoned when the fighting comes, yet the spoils are divided among others."Word of this reached the Prophet ﷺ, so he gathered them and sat in a tent and said, "Company of the Ansar, what is this talk of yours that has reached me?"They remained silent. Then he said, "Company of the Ansar, if all the people went down one valley and the Ansar went down a mountain pass, I would take the pass of the Ansar. Are you not content that the people should go off with the goods of this world while you go off with the Messenger of Allah, taking him along with you to your homes?"They said, "We are content, Messenger of Allah, we are content."Ibn Awn reported that Hisham bin Zayd said, "I asked Anas, 'Were you there to witness that?'"He replied, "How could I have been absent from that?"
