The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to administer discretionary punishment for drinking wine using sandals and palm branches. Then Abu Bakr struck forty lashes. When the time of Umar came and the people drew closer to the cultivated lands and villages, and drinking became widespread among them, he consulted the people about this matter.Abdul-Rahman bin Awf said, "I think you should make it like the lightest of the prescribed punishments."So Umar struck eighty lashes.
