The companions of the Prophet ﷺ said to him, "When we are with you and you speak to us, our hearts soften. But when we leave you and tend to our wives and children and busy ourselves with daily affairs, we change."The Prophet ﷺ replied, "If you could remain in that state continually, the angels would shake hands with you."
حدثنا مؤمل حدثنا حماد عن ثابت
أن أصحاب النبي ﷺ قالوا للنبي ﷺ إنا إذا كنا عندك فحدثتنا رقت قلوبنا فإذا خرجنا من عندك عافسنا النساء والصبيان وفعلنا وفعلنا فقال النبي ﷺ إن تلك الساعة لو تدومون عليها لصافحتكم الملائكة
Its isnad is sahih. The hadith is found in Muslim with similar wording, 4/2106, no. 2750, in the Book of Repentance, chapter on the merit of persisting in remembrance, and in Abu Yaala, 5/378, no. 3035, and in Ibn Hibban, 617, no. 2493, in al-Mawarid.
