We conquered Makkah, then we set out on the campaign of Hunayn. The polytheists came in the finest formation I have ever seen. The cavalry was lined up first, then the fighters, then the women behind them, then the sheep, then the camels. We were a large company, having reached six thousand, and over one of the wings of our cavalry was Khalid bin Walid. Our cavalry began to take refuge behind our backs. It was not long before our cavalry broke and fled, and the Bedouins fled along with everyone else we knew. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called out, "To me, Muhajirun! To me, Muhajirun!" Then he said, "To me, Ansar! To me, Ansar!"Anas said, "This is a hadith of my paternal uncles."We answered, "At your service, Messenger of Allah."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ advanced, and by Allah, we had not even reached them before Allah routed them. We seized that wealth, then went on to Taif and besieged them for forty nights, after which we returned to Makkah. We camped there, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began giving one man a hundred and another a hundred. The Ansar spoke among themselves, saying, "As for those who fought him, he gives to them, but as for those who did not fight him, he gives them nothing."Word of this reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he ordered the leading men of the Muhajirun and the Ansar to come in to him. He said, "Let no one come in to me except an Ansari," or, "the Ansar."We entered the tent until we had filled it.The Prophet of Allah ﷺ said, "Company of Ansar," or as he put it, "what is this report that has reached me?"They said, "Nothing has reached you, Messenger of Allah."He said, "What is this report that has reached me?"They said, "Nothing has reached you, Messenger of Allah."He said, "Are you not pleased that the people should go away with the wealth while you go away with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until you enter your homes?"They said, "We are pleased, Messenger of Allah."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If the people took one path and the Ansar took another, I would take the path of the Ansar."They said, "Messenger of Allah, we are pleased."He said, "Then be pleased," or as he put it.
