It was said to the Prophet ﷺ, "If only you would go to Abdullah bin Ubayy."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out, riding a donkey, and the Muslims walked along with him through salty, barren ground. When the Prophet ﷺ reached him, Abdullah said, "Get away from me. By Allah, the smell of your donkey has offended me."A man from the Ansar replied, "By Allah, the donkey of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ smells better than you do."A man from Abdullah's people became angry on his behalf, and then the companions of each man grew angry on his behalf, and they came to blows with palm branches, fists, and sandals.We were told that it was concerning them that this verse was revealed, "And if two factions among the believers fight, then make peace between them" [Hujurat 49:9].
حدثنا عارم حدثنا معتمر قال سمعت أبي يحدث أن
قيل للنبي ﷺ لو أتيت عبد الله بن أبي فانطلق رسول الله ﷺ وركب حمارا وانطلق المسلمون يمشون وهي أرض سبخة فلما انطلق إليه النبي ﷺ قال إليك عني فوالله لقد آذاني ريح حمارك فقال رجل من الأنصار والله لحمار رسول الله ﷺ أطيب ريحا منك قال فغضب لعبد الله رجل من قومه قال فغضب لكل واحد منهما أصحابه قال وكان بينهم ضرب بالجريد وبالأيدي والنعال فبلغنا أنها نزلت فيهم {وإن طائفتان من المؤمنين اقتتلوا فأصلحوا بينهما}
Its isnad is sahih. Bukhari related the hadith, 5/297, no. 2691 (Fath), in the chapter on reconciliation, on what has been said about making peace between people, and Muslim, 3/1422, no. 1424, in the chapter on jihad, on the Prophet's ﷺ supplication and patience.
