The Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard some voices and asked, "What is this?"They replied, "They are pollinating the date palms."He said, "If they left them and did not pollinate them, it would be fine."So they left them and did not pollinate them, and the dates came out shriveled. The Prophet ﷺ then asked, "What is the matter with your palms?"They said, "We left them because of what you said."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When it concerns a matter of your worldly affairs, you know it better. But when it concerns a matter of your religion, then refer it to me."
Its isnad is sahih. The hadith about pollinating date palms is well known, and it is found in Muslim, 4/1836, no. 2363, in the chapter on virtues, and on the obligation of complying with what he stated as a matter of religious law. This hadith is a point of disagreement among the scholars. The careful researchers among them said, this occurred at the beginning of the mission, and then Allah taught him everything. His command is to be obeyed, whether in matters of worldly life or matters of religion. What supports their view is that he did not know what they were doing, which is evidence that this took place early in the Hijrah.
