Ala bin Ziyad al-Adawi said, "Abu Hamza, how old was the Prophet of Allah ﷺ when he was sent as a prophet?"He replied, "He was forty years old."He asked, "What happened after that?"He said, "He stayed in Mecca for ten years and in Medina for ten years, completing sixty years, then Allah took him to Himself."He asked, "How did he look in age at that time?"He replied, "Like the most vigorous of men, the finest, the most handsome, and the most well-built."He asked, "Abu Hamza, did you fight in any battle with the Prophet of Allah ﷺ?"He answered, "Yes, I fought alongside him on the day of Hunayn. The polytheists came out in great numbers and charged at us until we saw our own cavalry behind our backs. Among the polytheists was a man who kept charging at us, crushing and breaking us. When the Prophet of Allah ﷺ saw this, he dismounted, and Allah
defeated them, so they turned and fled. Then the Prophet of Allah ﷺ stood up when he saw the victory, and the captives were brought to him one by one, pledging allegiance to him on Islam.A man from the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'I have made a vow that if the man who was crushing us earlier today is brought in, I will strike off his neck.'The Prophet of Allah ﷺ remained silent. Then the man was brought, and when he saw the Prophet of Allah ﷺ, he said, 'Prophet of Allah, I repent to Allah. Prophet of Allah, I repent to Allah.'The Prophet of Allah ﷺ held back and did not accept his pledge, so that the other man could fulfill his vow. The man kept looking at the Prophet ﷺ expecting him to order the killing, but he was in awe of the Prophet of Allah ﷺ and hesitated to kill him on his own. When he saw that the Prophet of Allah ﷺ was not going to do anything, he came to him and said, 'Prophet of Allah, my vow!'He replied, 'I only held back from accepting his pledge all this time so that you might fulfill your vow.'The man said, 'Prophet of Allah, why did you not give me a signal?'He said, 'It is not fitting for a prophet to give covert signals.'"
