When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ conquered Khaybar, Hajjaj bin Ilat said, "Messenger of Allah, I have wealth in Mecca and I have family there, and I wish to go to them. So permit me to say something against you or speak ill of you if I need to."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave him permission to say whatever he wished. So when he reached his wife, he said to her, "Gather for me whatever you have, for I want to buy from the spoils taken from Muhammad ﷺ and his companions. They have been routed and their wealth seized."This news spread throughout Mecca. The Muslims there were crushed, while the polytheists openly displayed joy and delight. The news reached Abbas, and he was so devastated that he could not stand up.Muamar said, Uthman al-Jazari informed me from Miqsam, who said, He took a son of his named Qutham, lay on his back, placed him on his chest, and began saying, "Live on, Qutham, live on, Qutham, you who resemble the one with the noble nose, son of the man of bounty. Let whoever is humbled be humbled."Thabit reported from Anas, Then he sent a servant to Hajjaj bin Ilat saying, "Woe to you! What have you brought, and what are you saying? What Allah has promised is better than what you have brought."Hajjaj bin Ilat said to the servant, "Convey my greetings to Abu al-Fadl and tell him to clear one of his rooms for me so I may come to him, for the news is what will please him."So the servant came, and when he reached the door of the house, he called out, "Rejoice, Abu al-Fadl!"Abbas leapt up with joy and kissed the servant between his eyes. The servant told him what Hajjaj had said, and Abbas freed him. Then Hajjaj came and told him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had conquered Khaybar and taken its wealth as spoils, that Allah's portions had been distributed among their wealth, and that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had chosen Safiya bint Huyayy for himself and given her the choice between being freed and becoming his wife or rejoining her family. She chose to be freed and become his wife."But I came only for some wealth I had here, which I wanted to gather and take away. I asked permission from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he allowed me to say whatever I wished. So keep my secret for three days, then say whatever you wish."His wife gathered the jewelry and goods she had, handed them to him, and he set off with them. After three days, Abbas came to Hajjaj's wife and asked, "What has your husband done?"She told him that he had left on such and such a day. Then she said, "May Allah not disgrace you, Abu al-Fadl. The news that reached you was difficult for us."He replied, "Indeed, may Allah not disgrace me. By the praise of Allah, the matter is nothing but what we love. Allah has opened Khaybar for His Messenger ﷺ, Allah's portions have been distributed there, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ chose Safiya bint Huyayy for himself. If you have any need of your husband, go and join him."She said, "By Allah, I think you are telling the truth."He said, "Indeed I am telling the truth, the matter is just as I have told you."Then he went out until he reached the gatherings of Quraysh. As he passed by them, they would say, "May nothing befall you but good, Abu al-Fadl."He said to them, "Nothing has befallen me but good, by the praise of Allah. Hajjaj bin Ilat has informed me that Allah has opened Khaybar for His Messenger, that Allah's portions have been distributed there, and that he chose Safiya for himself. He asked me to keep his secret for three days. He came only to take his wealth and whatever he had here, then to leave."So Allah turned the gloom that had been upon the Muslims onto the polytheists. The Muslims came out, including those who had entered their homes in despair, until they came to Abbas, and he told them the news. The Muslims rejoiced, and Allah turned whatever gloom, anger, or sorrow there had been onto the polytheists.
