A man from the tribe of Banu Tamim came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, I am a man of much wealth, with family, children, and guests. Tell me how I should spend and what I should do."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Pay the zakat from your wealth, for it is a purification that cleanses you. Maintain ties with your relatives, and recognize the right of the beggar, the neighbor, and the poor."The man said, "Messenger of Allah, make it less for me."He said, "Then give the near relative his due, and the poor, and the wayfarer, and do not squander wastefully."The man said, "That is enough for me, Messenger of Allah. When I have paid the zakat to your messenger, am I then free of its obligation before Allah and His Messenger?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Yes, when you have paid it to my messenger, you are free of it. Its reward is yours, and its sin lies upon whoever alters it."
حدثنا هاشم بن القاسم حدثنا ليث عن خالد بن يزيد عن سعيد بن أبي هلال
أتى رجل من بني تميم رسول الله ﷺ فقال يا رسول الله إني ذو مال كثير وذو أهل وولد وحاضرة فأخبرني كيف أنفق وكيف أصنع فقال رسول الله ﷺ تخرج الزكاة من مالك فإنها طهرة تطهرك وتصل أقرباءك وتعرف حق السائل والجار والمسكين فقال يا رسول الله أقلل لي قال فآت ذا القربى حقه والمسكين وابن السبيل ولا تبذر تبذيرا فقال حسبي يا رسول الله إذا أديت الزكاة إلى رسولك فقد برئت منها إلى الله ورسوله فقال رسول الله ﷺ نعم إذا أديتها إلى رسولي فقد برئت منها فلك أجرها وإثمها على من بدلها
Its isnad is sahih, and Haythami likewise graded it sahih in 3/63, saying, "Its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih."
