The Prophet of Allah ﷺ never ate at a table, nor from small dishes, nor was thin bread baked for him.I asked Qatada, "What did they eat on, then?"He replied, "On leather mats spread on the ground."
Its isnad is sahih. Yunus is al-Iskaf, that is, Yunus bin Abu Furat al-Qurashi, their freedman, Abu Furat al-Basri. They deemed him trustworthy, as Tirmidhi indicated when he gave his isnad and text. The hadith was narrated by Bukhari 9/530, number 5386, Fath, in the Book of Foods, chapter on thin bread, and by Tirmidhi 4/250, number 1788, in the Book of Foods, chapter on what the Prophet ﷺ used to eat, where he said, hasan gharib.Al-khiwan is any table one eats from, whether small or large. Al-sukurruja is any small dish reserved for a single individual. This is an allusion to the prohibition against dividing food into separate dishes, since that is the practice of non-Arabs. Al-sufar is the plural of sufrah.
