Walid bin Uqba led the people in the dawn prayer with four units of prayer, then turned to them and said, "Shall I add more for you?"The matter was reported to Uthman, who ordered that he be flogged.Ali said to Hasan bin Ali, "Get up, Hasan, and flog him."Hasan replied, "What do you have to do with this matter?"So Ali said, "Rather, you have grown weak and incapable. Get up, Abdullah bin Jafar, and flog him."Abdullah bin Jafar got up and flogged him while Ali counted. When the count reached forty, Ali said to him, "Stop."Then Ali said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ flogged for drinking wine with forty lashes, Abu Bakr flogged with forty, and Umar did so for the early part of his caliphate, then Umar completed it as eighty. All of this is sunnah."
حدثنا يزيد بن هارون أنبأنا سعيد بن أبي عروبة عن عبد الله الداناج
أن الوليد بن عقبة صلى بالناس الصبح أربعا ثم التفت إليهم فقال أزيدكم فرفع ذلك إلى عثمان فأمر به أن يجلد فقال علي للحسن بن علي قم يا حسن فاجلده قال وفيم أنت وذاك فقال علي بل عجزت ووهنت قم يا عبد الله بن جعفر فاجلده فقام عبد الله بن جعفر فجلده وعلي يعد فلما بلغ أربعين قال له أمسك ثم قال ضرب رسول الله ﷺ في الخمر أربعين وضرب أبو بكر أربعين وعمر صدرا من خلافته ثم أتمها عمر ثمانين وكل سنة
