The Prophet ﷺ, regarding the words of Allah Most High, "And when his Lord revealed Himself to the mountain" [Araf 7:143], said, "Like this," meaning that he extended the tip of his little finger.Ubayy said, "My father showed us how Muaz did it."Humayd Tawil said to him, "Why do you bother with this, Abu Muhammad?"He struck his chest a hard blow and said, "Who are you, Humayd? What are you, Humayd? Anas bin Malik narrates it to me from the Prophet ﷺ, and you say, 'Why do you bother with it?'"
حدثنا أبو المثنى معاذ بن معاذ العنبري قال حدثنا حماد بن سلمة حدثنا ثابت البناني
عن النبي ﷺ في قوله تعالى {فلما تجلى ربه للجبل} قال قال هكذا يعني أنه أخرج طرف الخنصر قال أبي أبي أرانا معاذ قال فقال له حميد الطويل ما تريد إلى هذا يا أبا محمد قال فضرب صدره ضربة شديدة وقال من أنت يا حميد وما أنت يا حميد يحدثني به أنس بن مالك عن النبي ﷺ فتقول أنت ما تريد إليه
Its isnad is sahih. The hadith is found in Tirmidhi 5/215, no. 3074, in the tafsir of Surah Araf, where he said, gharib sahih. Hakim also graded it sahih in 1/25, and Dhahabi agreed with him. This discussion among the early generations was only meant to bring the matter closer to the understanding, and Humayd Tawil only objected to this out of fear of falling into anthropomorphism and likening Allah to His creation, seeking safety.
