I used to hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say something, and I did not know whether it was being revealed to him or whether it was something he was saying himself. He would say, "If the son of Adam had two valleys of wealth, he would seek a third. Nothing fills the belly of the son of Adam except dust, and Allah turns in mercy to whoever turns to Him in repentance."
حدثنا يزيد أخبرنا شعبة عن قتادة
كنت أسمع رسول الله ﷺ يقول فلا أدري أشيء نزل عليه أم شيء يقوله وهو يقول لو كان لابن آدم واديان من مال لابتغى لهما ثالثا ولا يملأ جوف ابن آدم إلا التراب ويتوب الله على من تاب
Its chain of transmission is sahih, and it has already been mentioned. It appears in Bukhari 8/115 in the chapter on Riqaq, "What should be guarded against from the temptation of this world," and in Muslim 2/725, number 1048, in the chapter on zakat, "The disapproval of avarice for this world."
