A man used to write down revelation for the Prophet ﷺ. He had read Surah al-Baqarah and Aal Imran, and among us, whoever had read al-Baqarah and Aal Imran was considered learned, meaning held in high regard. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would dictate to him "Ghafooran Raheeman" (Forgiving, Merciful), but the man would write "Aleeman Hakeeman" (Knowing, Wise). The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would say to him, "Write such and such. Write whatever you wish."Then the Prophet would dictate "Aleeman Hakeeman," and the man would say, "Shall I write 'Sameean Baseeran' (All-Hearing, All-Seeing)?" The Prophet would reply, "Write, write whatever you wish."This man then apostatized from Islam and joined the polytheists. He said to them, "I know more about Muhammad than any of you. I used to write whatever I wished."Then the man died, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "The earth has not accepted him."Anas said, Abu Talha told me that he came to the land where this man had died and found him cast out on the ground.Abu Talha asked, "What is the matter with this man?"They replied, "We have buried him several times, but the earth would not accept him."
