The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched a military expedition under the command of Alqama bin Mujazziz, and I was among them. When we reached our destination, or were partway along the road, he gave permission to a group of the army to return, and he placed Abdullah bin Huzafa bin Qays as-Sahmi in command over them. Abdullah was one of those who had fought at Badr, and he had a playful streak in him, meaning he liked to joke. I was among those who returned with him.We stopped along the way, and the men kindled a fire to cook some food on it, or to warm themselves by it.Abdullah said to them, "Do I not have the right of being heard and obeyed by you?"They replied, "Yes."He said, "If I command you to do something, will you do it?"They said, "Yes."He said, "I command you, by my right and your obedience, to jump into this fire."Some men got up and prepared themselves to leap, and when he saw they were about to jump in, he said, "Hold yourselves back. I was only joking with you."When they returned, they mentioned this to the Prophet ﷺ, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever among them commands you to commit a sin, do not obey him."
