Hilal bin Hisn reported,

I came to Madinah and stayed at the house of Abu Saeed, and we sat together in the same gathering. He related that one morning he had bound a stone against his stomach because of hunger. His wife, or his mother, said to him, "Go to the Prophet ﷺ and ask him. So-and-so went to him and asked him, and he gave to him, and so-and-so went to him and asked him, and he gave to him as well."Abu Saeed said, "I replied, 'Let me first go and look for something.'" So he went out searching. Hajjaj's version has, "I found nothing, so I went to him while he was delivering a sermon, and I caught these words of his.He was saying, "Whoever seeks to restrain himself, Allah will keep him restrained, and whoever seeks self-sufficiency, Allah will make him self-sufficient. Whoever asks of us, either we will give to him or we will share with him what we have." Abu Hamza was the one uncertain about that wording. "And whoever refrains from asking us, or manages without us, is dearer to us than the one who asks of us."Abu Saeed said, "So I went back and did not ask him for anything, and Allah kept providing for us until I knew of no household among the Ansar with more wealth than ours."
