Shurayh bin Hani reported,

He asked Ayesha about wiping over leather socks. She said, "Ask Ali about that, for he used to go on military expeditions with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."So he asked him, and Ali replied, "For the traveler it is three days and their nights, and for the resident one day and one night."Muhammad was asked whether he used to attribute this to the Prophet ﷺ. He said that he considered it to be a tradition raised to the Prophet, but he was reluctant to do so explicitly.
