Abu Salama reported,

We were discussing Laylat al-Qadr, and some of the people said that it shifts throughout the year, so we walked over to Abu Saeed Khudri.I said, "Abu Saeed, did you hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mention Laylat al-Qadr?"He replied, "Yes. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed itikaf during the middle ten days of Ramadan, and we performed itikaf with him. On the morning of the twentieth, he returned home and we returned with him. He had been shown Laylat al-Qadr but was then made to forget it. He said, 'I was shown Laylat al-Qadr, but then I was made to forget it. I saw myself prostrating in water and mud. So whoever performed itikaf with me, let him return to his place of itikaf. Seek it in the last ten nights, on the odd-numbered ones.' That same evening the sky poured rain on us. Half of the mosque was a thatched roof made of palm fronds, and it leaked. By the One who honored him and sent down the Book upon him, I saw him lead us in the Maghrib prayer on the night of the twenty-first with his forehead and the tip of his nose in water and mud."

حدثنا يحيى حدثنا محمد بن عمرو قال

حدثني أبو سلمة بن عبد الرحمن قال

تذاكرنا ليلة القدر فقال بعض القوم إنها تدور من السنة فمشينا إلى أبي سعيد الخدري قلت يا أبا سعيد سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يذكر ليلة القدر قال نعم اعتكف رسول الله ﷺ العشر الوسط من رمضان واعتكفنا معه فلما أصبحنا صبيحة عشرين رجع ورجعنا معه وأري ليلة القدر ثم أنسيها فقال إني رأيت ليلة القدر ثم أنسيتها فأراني أسجد في ماء وطين فمن اعتكف معي فليرجع إلى معتكفه ابتغوها في العشر الأواخر في الوتر منها وهاجت علينا السماء آخر تلك العشية وكان نصف المسجد عريشا من جريد فوكف فوالذي هو أكرمه وأنزل عليه الكتاب لرأيته صلى بنا صلاة المغرب ليلة إحدى وعشرين وإن جبهته وأرنبة أنفه لفي الماء والطين
