Abu Saeed Khudri reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to like holding palm-branch stalks in his hand. One day he entered the mosque carrying one of them, and he noticed traces of phlegm on the qiblah wall of the mosque. He scraped them off with the stalk until the wall was clean. Then he turned to the people, visibly angered, and said, "Would any of you like it if a man came up to him and spat in his face? When one of you stands to pray, he is facing his Lord عز وجل, and an angel is on his right. So let him not spit in front of him, nor to his right. Let him spit beneath his left foot, or to his left. And if it comes upon him suddenly, let him do this," and he folded part of his garment over another part.Yahya then spat into his own garment and rubbed it in.
