The Prophet ﷺ observed itikaf during the middle ten days of Ramadan, and we observed it with him. On the morning of the twentieth, he passed by us as we were moving our belongings and said, "Whoever has been performing itikaf, let him remain in his place of itikaf. I was shown this Night, but I have forgotten it. I saw myself prostrating in water and mud. The roof of the mosque was made of palm branches."Then the sky poured down rain, and I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with traces of water and mud on his nose and forehead.
حدثنا سفيان حدثنا محمد بن عمرو عن أبي سلمة وابن أبي لبيد عن أبي سلمة سمعت أبا سعيد وابن جريج عن سليمان الأحول عن أبي سلمة
اعتكف العشر الوسط واعتكفنا معه يعني النبي ﷺ فلما كان صبيحة عشرين مر بنا ونحن ننقل متاعنا فقال من كان معتكفا فليكن في معتكفه إني رأيت هذه الليلة فنسيتها ورأيتني أسجد في ماء وطين وعريش المسجد جريد فهاجت السماء فرأيت رسول الله ﷺ وإن على أنفه وجبهته أثر الماء والطين
Its isnad is sahih through all its routes. Ibn Abu Labid is Abdullah, and he is trustworthy, and the narrator from him is Sufyan, and likewise Sufyan is the narrator from Juraij, Abdul-Malik bin Abdul-Aziz bin Juraij.The hadith is found in Bukhari 2/298, no. 813 (Fath), Muslim 2/825, no. 1167, in the book of Fasting, Nasai 3/79-80, no. 1356, and Malik 1/319, in the book of itikaf, chapter on what has been said about Laylat al-Qadr.His statement, "then the sky broke," means it rained.
