A man said, "Messenger of Allah, we live in a land where lizards are abundant. What do you command us, or what is your ruling for us?"He replied, "It was mentioned to me that a nation from the Children of Israil was transformed." He neither commanded it nor forbade it.Abu Saeed said, sometime after that, Umar said, "Allah benefits more than one person through it. It is the common food of the shepherds, and if I had any, I would eat it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ simply found it distasteful."
حدثنا ابن أبي عدي عن داود عن أبي نضرة
قال رجل يا رسول الله إنا بأرض مضبة فما تأمرنا أو ما تفتينا قال ذكر لي أن أمة من بني إسرائيل مسخت فلم يأمر ولم ينه قال أبو سعيد فلما كان بعد ذلك قال عمر إن الله لينفع به غير واحد وإنه لطعام عامة الرعاء ولو كان عندي لطعمته وإنما عافه رسول الله ﷺ
Its isnad is sahih. His saying "al-mudibba" means it contains many dabb (plural of dabb), which is a well-known animal found in the desert, similar to the harzun known to the people of Syria, and close to the ursa known to the people of Egypt. The hadith is found in Bukhari 9/666, Fath no. 5536-5537, with the same meaning, in the Book of Slaughtered Animals, and likewise in Muslim 3/1546, no. 1951, in the Book of Hunting, both in the chapter on the dabb.
