When Umar bin Khattab reached Sargh, news came to him that a severe plague had struck Syria. He said, "I have been informed of the severity of the plague in Syria. I thought to myself, if my appointed time comes while Abu Ubayda bin Jarra is still alive, I will appoint him as my successor. If Allah asks me, 'Why did you appoint him over the nation of Muhammad ﷺ?' I will say, 'I heard your Messenger ﷺ say that every prophet has a trustworthy one, and my trustworthy one is Abu Ubayda bin Jarra.'"The people objected to this and said, "What about the elders of Quraysh?" meaning the Banu Fihr. Then he said, "If my appointed time comes after Abu Ubayda has died, I will appoint Muaz bin Jabal as my successor. If my Lord
asks me, 'Why did you appoint him?' I will say, 'I heard your Messenger ﷺ say that on the Day of Resurrection he will be raised up a step ahead of the scholars.'"
Its isnad is daif because of a break in transmission. Shurayh did not meet Umar, as in the previous hadith, and likewise Rashid bin Saad Al-Himsi did not meet Umar. See 1682, 1683.Sargh, with the sin and ra both having a fatha, and the ra also carrying a sukoon, is a village in the valley of Tabuk on the road to Syria.
