Shihab bin Mudlij went out to live in the desert. His son had an argument with a man, and the man said to him, "Son of the one who turned back from this hijrah!"So Shihab traveled to Madinah, met Abu Hurayrah, and heard him say, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'The best of people are two men. A man who fights in the cause of Allah until he descends upon a place where he strikes fear into the enemy, and a man in some corner of the desert who establishes the five prayers, gives the rightful dues from his wealth, and worships his Lord until death comes to him.'"Shihab fell to his knees and asked, "Did you yourself hear this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abu Hurayrah?"Abu Hurayrah replied, "Yes."So Shihab returned to his desert home and remained there.

أن شهاب بن مدلج نزل البادية فساب ابنه رجلا فقال يا ابن الذي تعرب بهذه الهجرة فأتى شهاب المدينة فلقي أبا هريرة فسمعه يقول قال رسول الله ﷺ أفضل الناس رجلان رجل غزا في سبيل الله حتى يهبط موضعا يسوء العدو ورجل بناحية البادية يقيم الصلوات الخمس ويؤدي حق ماله ويعبد ربه حتى يأتيه اليقين فجثا على ركبتيه قال أنت سمعته من رسول الله ﷺ يا أبا هريرة يقول له قال نعم فأتى باديته فأقام بها

Its isnad is sahih. Abu Qalus is Husayn bin Malik, trustworthy, who died in the prison of Hajjaj.10713m - Abdul-Samad narrated to us. Abu Hilal narrated to us. Abu Wazi narrated to us, from Abu Ayman, from Abu Hurairah, who said, "I set out along with Abdullah bin Umar and Samura bin Jundab, and we came to the Prophet ﷺ." They said to us, "Go to the masjid of Taqwa." So we set out toward it. Then his two hands met us on the shoulders of Abu Bakr and Umar, and he came down before him and said, "Who are these, Abu Bakr?" He said, "Abdullah bin Umar, Abu Hurairah, and Samura." Hasan.(10713m) Its isnad is hasan. Abu Hilal, Muhammad bin Sulaym Rasibi, frequently passes through narrations, and Ibn Main confirmed his truthfulness, Abu Dawud deemed him trustworthy, and Ahmad tolerated his hadith, while others deemed him daif. Abu Wazi is Jabir bin Amr Rasibi, whom Ahmad deemed trustworthy and Ibn Adi approved of, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the trustworthy. As for Abu Ayman, Ibn Hajar said of him, "A well-known Syrian, from whom Artah bin Munzir and Muawiya bin Salih narrated," after mentioning that Husayn had said of him, "Unknown," and likewise Haythami, in volume 10 page 4, said of him, "Unknown." So he is not unknown, nor are the two mentioned before him, as Shaykh Abdul-Rahman Banna stated in his commentary on this hadith and on its meaning, about which he withheld judgment.
