A man broke his fast during Ramadan, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered him to make expiation by freeing a slave, fasting two consecutive months, or feeding sixty poor people.The man said, "I cannot find the means."Then a basket of dates was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, "Take this and give it in charity."The man said, "Messenger of Allah, I do not know anyone more in need than I am."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed until his eye-teeth showed, and said, "Take it."
حدثنا روح حدثنا مالك وعثمان بن عمر قال أخبرنا مالك عن ابن شهاب عن حميد بن عبد الرحمن بن عوف
أن رجلا أفطر في رمضان فأمره رسول الله ﷺ أن يكفر بعتق رقبة أو صيام شهرين أو إطعام ستين مسكينا قال لا أجد فأتي رسول الله ﷺ بعرق من تمر فقال رسول الله ﷺ خذ هذا فتصدق به قال يا رسول الله ما أجد أحوج مني فضحك رسول الله ﷺ حتى بدت أنيابه قال خذها
Its isnad is sahih. It was narrated by the six except Nasai, all of them in the chapter on fasting, with this wording. Bukhari narrated it, 4/163, chapter titled "If he has intercourse during Ramadan," and Muslim, "The prohibition of intercourse during the day in Ramadan," 2/781, no. 1111, and Abu Dawud, 2390, "The expiation of one who has intercourse with his wife," and Malik, "The expiation of one who breaks his fast during Ramadan," 1/297.
