The Prophet ﷺ said that a prostitute once saw a dog on a hot day circling a well with its tongue hanging out from thirst, so she took off her leather sock and drew water for it, and she was forgiven.
حدثنا يزيد أخبرنا هشام بن حسان عن محمد
عن النبي ﷺ أن امرأة بغيا رأت كلبا في يوم حار يطيف ببئر قد أدلع لسانه من العطش فنزعت موقها فغفر لها
Its isnad is sahih. Bukhari narrated it 6/359 no. 3321 in Fath, in the Book of the Beginning of Creation, chapter of when a fly falls, and Muslim 4/1761 no. 2245 in the Book of Greetings, chapter on the merit of giving animals water, with similar wording.His saying, "she took off her sock," means she filled it with water and gave the dog to drink, so she was forgiven. The "moq" means a leather sock in the language of the Persians, and it is a Persian word that has been Arabized.
